Entry concrete must connect the building, surrounding grade and walking route cleanly. Step dimensions, landing size, door clearance, drainage and adjoining walks should be considered as one system.
Begin with the doorway and finished grade
Measure the elevation from the finished entry threshold to the planned landing and surrounding grade. The number and proportions of steps follow from those conditions and applicable requirements. Door swing, trim, siding and waterproofing details may affect the landing elevation.
Coordinate the approach
A stoop or landing usually connects to a sidewalk, driveway or accessible route. Plan the approach width, direction, slope and drainage so the finished work feels intentional rather than added on. Handrail or guard requirements should be confirmed before construction.
Replacement work needs extra review
Removing existing steps can reveal unknown foundation, drainage or attachment conditions. Photos, approximate measurements and information about the building help with the first review, but the final scope depends on conditions verified at the property.
