A concrete surface is part of the larger site. Its elevation and slope affect doors, garages, lawns, road connections, accessible routes and the direction water travels during a storm.
Identify the fixed points
Garage floors, door thresholds, curb elevations, existing walks, utility structures and property boundaries often establish limits. Measuring those points early helps determine whether the proposed concrete can drain while maintaining practical transitions.
Look beyond the edge of the slab
Water leaving the concrete still needs somewhere appropriate to go. The team should review nearby low areas, downspouts, slopes, retaining walls and neighboring property. Sometimes surrounding grading or drainage work is needed as part of the concrete-related site preparation.
Confirm the plan before placement
Forms provide the last clear opportunity to check layout and elevation. Dimensions, slopes, steps, openings and connections should match the approved scope. Changes after concrete placement are far more disruptive than corrections made during planning and forming.
